The Regional Population Office with the Philippine Center for Population Development (PCPD) conducted an orientation-training on the PopDevEd teaching modules for Catholic Schools in the municipalities of Luna and Kabugao on September 4-6 and November 21-23, 2013 respectively.
The modules were developed by the PCPD together with professors from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. Its aim is to develop a better integrated approach in discussing the concepts of Population and development for the youth and adding this new module to the existing curriculums in elementary, secondary and tertiary schools.
Topics in the module include a values based approach to population health and development, the reproductive system, fertility, boy-girl relationships and marriage. These modules have been developed in several catholic schools & universities and all have been pretested before being collated into the complete guidebook for teachers.
Although the modules were specifically developed for Catholic Schools, its mixture of scientific and spiritual values-based approaches into discussing youth and population development can be applied to existing curriculums of public schools and universities in the country.
The PopDevEd modules also aim to assist in the target of reducing teen pregnancies before the 2015 deadline as per the country’s commitments to the Millennium Development Goals.
A total of 69 elementary and secondary teachers and staff from the municipalities of Luna, Flora, Sta. Marcela, Pudtol, Conner and Kabugao attended the two series of 3-day training-workshops together with technical staff from PopCom-CAR and DepEd Apayao.
The modules including the lessons for tertiary students will be rolled out by the start of 2014 into other provinces in the region.
