On July 27, 2014 at exactly 12:06 AM, it was estimated by the Philippine Statistics Authority that the 100 Millionth Filipino baby will be born. This milestone event puts the Philippines into one of the most populous nations in the world and currently ranking at 12th in terms of number of people.
With this event, the Commission on Population together with its agency partners in the health and social welfare sector namely, the Deparment of Health, PhilHealth, National Nutrition Council, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Information Agency and Local Government Units, have started the search for the 100 Millionth Filipino Baby. The search shall focus on monitoring pre-identified government hospitals all over the country. Around 100 babies nationwide shall be identified to be part of the event.
In the Cordillera Administrative Region, all 6 provinces and Baguio City shall each have one government hospital to be monitored on July 27, 2014. Each hospital shall have the first baby born on a normal delivery from 12:06 AM onwards be identified as part of the search. The newborn shall then receive a starter kit worth Php 5,000 that would include supplies and services to support the baby. PopCom-CAR shall be monitoring all 7 general and provincial hospitals in the region within the coming week to identify the 100 Millionth Babies.
This search focuses on the symbolic nature of the 100 Millionth Baby as the country faces a developmental challenge with a continuously growing population. Although the Commission acknowledges that this is a momentous event in Philippine history, it is still looking at the challenge of what this event means as to our country’s goals in terms of Population and Development. The search aims to advocate for better programs and services to support not only a growing population but also ensuring that these developments are both inclusive and sustainable.
The Commission shall be conducting a Media Briefing Forum at the Baguio General Hospital Cobalt Building on July 28, 2014 at 10AM to discuss this event and to also present the 100 Millionth Baby for Baguio City and Benguet to the general public.
